When doctors’ day ends, doctors must stay home, a nurse tells me

Dr. Phyllis Siegel, an internist at University Medical Center of Cincinnati in Ohio, is one of many doctors in the U.S. who decided to stay home this week to protest the Trump administration’s decision to rescind protections for abortion providers.

Siegel is one in a number of doctors who are calling for the government to stop funding Planned Parenthood.

“I am very disappointed by this decision, because I believe this is a direct assault on reproductive health,” Siegel told Business Insider in a phone interview.

“It’s a direct attack on doctors and their patients and their ability to provide care to women.”

Siegel’s colleague, Dr. Amy A. Breslau, is another doctor who is calling for a defunding of Planned Parenthood, which is why she was able to get a deferral from the Trump Administration.

“The decision to end all government funding of Planned, including Title X, is an affront to women’s health and the right to access safe, legal abortion,” Breslow said in a statement.

“We’re calling on President Trump to rescind the decision, and Congress to enact a law to defund Planned Parenthood.”
